Lack of speedometers in Mauritius
From the beginning of the month, speedometers were made obligatory for all motorcycles and mopeds.

However, there is a lack of speedometers in the market. Speedometers for motorcycles like Motobecane, Mini Honda, Daelim and Panther, are not available locally.

“The main reason for this is that it has been many years since these vehicles have not been imported,” said a bike dealer. He added that even spare parts are not commercially accessible.

An officer from the Traffic Road Management Safety Unit said, “If motorcycles do not have speedometers, it is a violation of the law and is liable to a fine.”

The National Transport Authority (NTA) is the body that has set the law and should have normally been aware that speedometers are not obtainable in the market. An officer of this organisation said that the NTA is aware of this problem.

Sanjaye, a motorcyclist, said, “This is creating a controversy among the population. We want to buy speedometers but we cannot do anything if we don’t find any in Mauritius. In this case we are at risk of paying a fine even if we are not at fault.”
