Alongside the J250 Lexus GX and Toyota Land Cruiser, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma (N400) and 2025 Toyota 4Runner (N500) share a lot of commonalities, including the modern TNGA-F platform and the 2.4-liter turbocharger gasoline engine, with or without electrification.

After months of rumors, leaks, and teasers, the 2024 Tacoma and 2025 4Runner are finally out and about at nationwide dealerships. However, while the N400 appeared less than a decade after the previous iteration, the 4Runner needed no less than 14 years to change generations, marking an even more significant leap forward.

Both share the same TNGA-F platform, and almost everything ahead of the B-pillar is also shared (except for the bumper and headlight treatment) – including the cockpit- and they also have the same engines. Alas, the Tacoma offers a bit more choice as the 2.4-liter turbo has two configurations instead of one (278 hp) on the 4Runner. It also comes with a manual transmission in certain conditions, while the eight-speed automatic gearbox is the only transmission and is the sole choice for the SUV.

They do share the 326-hp electrified powertrain without changes. So, you could say the Tacoma is more practical with ampler choice – you can have the mid-size pickup truck with the XtraCab and Double Cab plus five or six-foot bed styles. The trim choice is also magnificent across both models – 11 grades for Tacoma and 12 of them on the 4Runner. However, the Taco wins in terms of MSRPs – it starts from $31,590 instead of $40,770!

As such, it's no wonder that many folks choose the truck over the SUV, even if the latter is slightly fresher. For example, someone asked Waipahu, Hawaii-based MJ Motorsports, to help them stand out in any Tacoma crowd with their lightly custom truck, and the aftermarket company readily obliged, as always. The result is a Bronze Oxide Toyota Tacoma Double Cab, a color which is available from the TRD Sport trim and up, and the beautiful color is contrasted by 17-inch Rays ZE40X alloy wheels (17 by 8.5-inch with +20 offset). At the same time, the Eibach Stage 2R lift kit mixes nicely with the chunky 315/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss all-terrain tires.

By the way, if you're rather inclined toward the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, we didn't mention it for no reason. Here's an example customized by Westcott Designs for the nonprofit organization A Race Against Blindness (they fund therapy for RP/BBS childhood blindness). The 4Runner features a Freespirit Recreation rooftop tent, KC HiLiTES off-road lights, Method Race Wheels shod in Toyo all-terrain tires, NYTOP parts, and numerous Westcott bits and pieces. The design is pretty stunning, too, with the decals working perfectly with the light paintjob, black wheels, and the amber-tinted KCs to create a vintage-modern atmosphere.
