Police cracks down on illegal transport
A police crackdown led by superintendents Gunga and Louison booked 12 minibuses for traffic contraventions on Sunday morning at Britannia.

The operation started between 5.30 am and 9m. The drivers were charged with ‘hiring a motor vehicle other than it has been licensed for’, ‘breach of conditions attached to public service vehicle licence’, ‘carrying unauthorized passengers’ and of ‘failing to produce duplicate sheet of contract book’.

A dozen passengers who were travelling on a minibus were also booked because it is an offence to travel in unlicensed vehicles.

The aim behind this is to convey a strong message to the people not to commute in illegal means of transport.

SP Louison said that it is really difficult to catch these van drivers as they act in connivance with the passengers. He pointed out that such operations will cover other parts of the south.

To note, since the accident which took place at Monté Lapeyre where three people lost their lives in a van, police have intensified crackdown operations. He added that speed controls will also be exercised on roads. “We will intensify these operations to deter illegal practices on our roads,” said Louison.
