A reprieve for motorists. New Speed Cameras will be operational again from noon on Tuesday, May 28, but the authorities did not go ahead with the fines. Those caught speeding will not be punished, said the DCP Bheekun during a press conference attended by officers of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, those of the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit as well as South African experts.
There is still time for the technical tests, the officers said, without elaborating on the date the tickets will be recorded. On the other hand, in the evening, the Flash Tests will be made only once. That, in order not to disrupt motorists.
What will happen to those who have already been flashed by the cameras? They will be granted amnesty, said DCP Bheekun. This, in part because the period of 14 days from the date they were taken in contravention has been exceeded. For now then, 485 cases of speeding were recorded. But they will not be considered. However, the police will continue to speed controls with manual cameras, added DCP Bheekun. A file to this effect was sent to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions).
Other ads in the press conference: the authorities will go to Phase II of the implementation of Speed Cameras "shortly." This Phase II includes the installation of 15 additional cameras. Initially, 20 devices had been installed during Phase I. Phase III is also provided with the installation of 17 additional cameras. And everything should go very fast because the company responsible for making the operational aircraft has only 18 months to do so. However, his contract started in September 2012.
