A high tide had swept the shore the night before the incident and the vehicle was dragged into the water in an inlet on the Arabian side of the Gulf, on the border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Those who came to try to recover the vehicle found it with the driver's window down and water pouring into the cabin, as the harm was already done. That is how the occupants probably came out of the car when they felt the Toyota was sinking.
Experts rushed to rescue, but the mission was far from easy. There was no flat land next to the water, so the vehicles trying to tow the Toyota Land Cruiser out of the water had to battle both the incline and the weight of the SUV.
To prevent the Land Cruiser from rolling over, as it was already positioned on a steep shelf, it was pulled in two different directions. One vehicle sat parallel with the sea, pulling it to the left, while another dragged from the top of the adjacent sand dune.
According to the description of the video, the hero of the day was a British man with a shoulder replacement and bronchitis. He was the one who got undressed and went into the cold water to attach the winches to the Toyota and shift the automatic transmission of the SUV into Neutral.
He is known as the Qatar Sand Man and specializes in vehicle recovery. He was the one who saved the day once again as all the others stood watching from the shore in their winter jackets.
It is, indeed, winter in Qatar, but temperatures do not go below 52 degrees Fahrenheit (11.6 degrees Celsius), not even during the night. However, it definitely isn't the season for bathing in the sea.
The team managed to recover the Land Cruiser, but it is probably going to end up with a salvage title. Everyone and their mother know that seawater and engines don't go well together.
The famous flooded cars of 2024
This Toyota Land Cruiser rescued in Qatar is the first flooded car incident that we reported in 2025. Last year, however, flooded cars poured into the salvage car market.
The most famous of the cars that ended up in the water in 2024 was the brand-new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Its owner lost control, slipped off the road, crashed into a tree and ended up plunging into a river just a day after he had purchased the sports car.
Car rebuild expert Mat Armstrong placed the winning bid when the insurance company auctioned it off and is now rebuilding it. However, the project is way more difficult than he originally thought it would be.
Another story that went viral was that of the Rivian R1T, which survived Hurricane Helene, somewhere in Asheville. The pickup truck was seen rolling down the street, completely covered in mud. The owner had found it like that some 150 feet from where he parked it. Surprisingly, it still ran and drove.
In fact, the truck's door handles popped out when he approached the vehicle, which was a sign that the battery was still charged and the R1T was very much alive. If that was not the best-ever advertising campaign for the EV maker, then we don't know what it is. And Rivian didn't even have to pay for it.
Back in September 2024, a Ford Mustang was fished out of the waters of the San Diego Bay in California. The San Diego Police Department inspected the car and found several open cans of alcohol inside, but the driver was nowhere to be seen.
However, later that day, when the rescue teams had not even left the scene, the owner showed up casually walking by, pretending he had no idea how his car ended up in the water. He and the woman who was accompanying him told the police they were just strolling on the beach when they recognized their Mustang.
However, many would say that if you want to drive a car through the water, you should get a Tesla. One was spotted driving in Kaohsiung City during the Gaemi Typhoon that hit Taiwan, causing severe flooding across the country. Authorities urged people in the affected areas to take shelter, but a Tesla driver braved the flood, driving through the water without a care in the world.
Elon Musk stated that the Cybertruck would be able to serve briefly as a boat, crossing "rivers, lakes, and even seas that aren't too choppy." However, we are all still waiting for the update. Furthermore, the Tesla driving in the flooded streets of Kaohsiung was no Cybertruck.
