Mauritian’s auto market shrunk by 2% over the first 4 months of the year compared to last year.
The number of registration with the National Transport Authority (NTA) is $ 4,207 vehicles against 4,300 vehicles in 2010, less than 93 vehicles the first 4 months of last year.
The sale of new vehicles rose 12% over the same period in 2010 with 2,554 vehicles sold this year against 2271 January-April 2010. As regards the cars 'recognition', sales were down 19% with 1 653 vehicles 'recognition' sold during the first 4 months of 2011 against 2029 for the same period in 2010.
During the first 4 months of 2011, 60% of registered vehicles are new vehicles as against 39% of vehicles 'recognition'. The sale of new vehicles for the first 4 months of 2011 saw an increase of 8% over the same period in 2010 when new vehicles accounted for 53% of vehicles registered during this period.
The decline in sales of vehicles 'recognition' had already begun before the tragic events that rocked Japan in March 2011. "This fall, says Patrick Falzon, president of the Mauritius Vehicles Dealers' Association (MVDA), is due to several reasons, including high prices due to the high value of the yen, the lower availability of vehicles due to Sri Lanka and the crisis that hit Japan making people change less often car."
Until March of this year, the brand leader in the Mauritian market is Toyota, followed by Nissan.
