Early Details on the Next Gen BMW 5 Series
Expect an arrival date sometime in 2016. And yes, the ugly 5 Series GT will return. Set to arrive sometime in 2016, BMW is currently at work developing and testing its next generation 5 Series.

With the competition getting even stiffer from the likes of not only Mercedes and Audi, but also from Lexus, BMW isn’t about to let one of its most popular models fall behind the pack. AutoExpress managed to find out some details and, as expected, the new 5 Series likely won’t have a radical styling update.

It’ll be more evolutionary than revolutionary but still very much in line with the current design language. It’ll supposedly look more premium and sportier than the current car. It’ll also ride on a new lightweight platform that will allow for better handling. It’ll also lose some weight thanks to a diet of increased high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. BMW reportedly wants to cut weight by at least 220 lbs. Expect to see both gasoline and diesel engines. In Europe, expect a 2.0-liter four diesel to power the 520d. Also for that market don’t be shocked to see BMW offer a 1.5-liter three-cylinder as well as the 2.0-liter turbo four found in the new Mini Cooper S.

The US will almost certainly receive a turbo four, but we expect the inline-six option to remain. The next M5 will probably have the same, yet more refined 4.4-liter twin-scroll V8. As is with the current car, the next 6 Series, 5 Series GT and Touring will also be based on the new sedan.
