The fifth generation Honda CR-V that has been under development in USA since early this year, has been spied testing by a Temple of VTEC reader.

The test mule of the next-gen 2017 Honda CR-V seen in the spy shots is apparently wearing the production body. Moving to its fifth generation, the CR-V is expected to undergo an evolutionary redesign and incorporate cues from the tenth-gen Honda Civic. The front-end especially, is expected to have a good amount of familiarity with the Civic, while the rear-end would have new L-shaped tail lamps.

Takahiro Hachigo, President, CEO and Representative Director, Honda Motor Company, has confirmed that the next-gen Honda CR-V will be based on the modular platform which underpins the tenth-gen Honda Civic. Honda is considering a three-row version of the redesigned CR-V, and it could be offered in countries where the left-hand drive-only Honda Pilot isn't sold. To make space for the third row seats, the CR-V's wheelbase could be stretched by 80 mm.

The next-gen 2017 Honda CR-V could be offered with the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Honda Civic and the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the next-gen Honda Civic Type R, along with 2.0- and/or 2.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines.

It has been speculated that the new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine may be a replacement for the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated engine. In European markets, as well as in India, where the next-gen model will have 65% localisation, a 1.6-litre diesel engine is also expected to be offered.
