The new generations of the BMW M3 and M4 are very close to a debut, and the Bavarian brand now has a massive gallery of images of camouflaged examples of both models. The picture that intrigues us the most, though, is an extremely dark photo showing the pair without any concealment. The version above is brightened in an effort to get a better look.
Unfortunately, making the image brighter is even more confirmation that the M4 follows the latest 4 Series by wearing a Brobdingnagian version of the kidney grille. The vehicle on the left of the picture is the M3 showing off its L-shaped taillights.
BMW now officially confirms that the M3 and M4 are available in two forms, at least in Europe. Both use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine. The standard version makes 473 horsepower (353 kilowatts) and connects to a six-speed manual. The Competition variant packs 503 hp (375 kW) and uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Rear-wheel-drive versions of the models arrive first. An all-wheel-drive layout arrives sometime later.
Both models will debut in September, and BMW is currently putting the finishing touches on the suspension, brake, and assistance tech settings. The work is happening at the German brand's engineering centers in Miramas in Southern France and Arjeplog, Sweden. The Nürburgring Nordschleife would usually be the primary development track, but the new M3 and M4 are also getting finetuning at the Sachsenring circuit. In fact, you can read our driving impressions of the coupe from the course.
After the debut, we might have to be a little patient for the M3 and M4 actually to be available in showrooms. According to the report on our driving impressions, they're likely going to be at dealers in early 2021.
