Robert Bosch GmbH is opening an r&d center and factory in Changsha in southeastern China to produce starter motors, generators, thermal systems and wipers.

The 700 million yuan ($87 million) operation will cover 12,760 square meters and will double the German supplier's annual production of starter motors in Changsha to 3.3 million units.

With the new plant, Bosch Automotive Products Changsha Co. will employ 5,000 employees, and the new r&d center will take on 350 workers.

According to Bosch, the technical center will devote one-third of its resources to the development of start-stop systems for Chinese automakers.

In China, Bosch employs 30,200 workers, with sales of 42.3 billion yuan in fiscal 2011.
