This isn't the company's first production car (duh), but it promises that one is on the way. Faraday Future announced plans to build a $1-billion factory in North Las Vegas, NV, and says the FFZERO1 concept rides on the same Variable Platform Architecture that will underpin all of its future models. (Yes, you've heard this one before.) How FF's VPA works is simple: the battery cells rest in between the front and rear axles, and the wheelbase can be stretched in the middle to account for more batteries, hooked together in "strings." Faraday Future says this variable architecture allows it to easily configure front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive, not to mention extended range abilities and varying levels of power.
The FFZERO1 is a single-seat racecar, albeit one without a series to compete in, and the driver actually sits at a reclined, 45-degree angle that's said to improve blood circulation. Your smartphone docks in the center of the steering wheel, and we assume a compatible app would be how you control all of the car's necessary functions. FF even says this car is – again, hypothetically – fully autonomous, both on and off the racetrack. We'll believe it when we see one flying around a circuit with the driver leaned back, reading a newspaper.
But if all that isn't enough, just look at it. The concept looks rightfully futuristic. Makes sense, as the company says it aims to "define the future from the future's perspective." Faraday Future says its "UFO line" that juts along the side of the car will be found on all of its future models as a signature design trait. Suffice it to say, we expect the company's first series production model to be a bit more, you know, normal.
The FFZERO1 makes its world debut at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, where Faraday Future is also announcing a partnership with Chinese company Letv. For those unfamiliar, Letv is the sort of "Netflix of China" that's supposedly launching in the US super soon. We'll have more on the FFZERO1 later this week, live from CES.
