Police on trail of car theft gang in north
Police are investigating a possible network of car thieves that operate in the north of the island. As part of the investigation, the police in Baie du Tombeau, under the supervision of sergeant Daworaz, arrested two youngsters, aged 18 and 20 years on the night of April 22.

They appear in court on Monday under a provisional charge of ‘supposed proceed of larceny’. However, this is only the beginning of the investigation and according to our sources, more arrests are expected.

This weekend, a resident of the north recorded a complaint alleging that his car disappeared from outside his home. Subsequently, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) officers of Trou aux Biches took charge of the matter. They relayed the news to all units as they had registered a similar case a few days ago. The Baie du Tombeau police, in collaboration with a unit of the Emergency Response Service (ERS) and the Divisional Supporting Unit (DSU), found a group with a van on an abandoned plot near Ritz Club.

The youngsters were busy loading spare parts of a vehicle when the officers caught them red handed. A resident of Triolet who was there managed to flee. The two suspects and the driver of the van were taken to the police station of the locality to be questioned.

The driver said that several youngsters had asked him to make a trip for them and that he knew nothing about this. The suspects have not revealed much yet.

Police believe that the gang members first steal a car and then take out the spare parts to sell to individuals. They burn what is left of the stolen vehicles. The investigation is still underway.
