Fatal Road Accidents On The Rise, 87 Killed Since January
Jugdish Doorjun, 66, and Sergeant Mathoorah from the Traffic branch were killed in road accidents yesterday. 87 people were killed in road accidents since the start of 2012, six more than last year.

Last year, 152 people were killed in accidents, 96 of them took place between January and August 2011. Police has been ordered to be more strict concerning traffic and road safety related offences.

Between January and August, police issued 8,890 citations for seatbelt offences. The fine for people who do not wear seatbelts can reach Rs 10,000.

Police reported that motorcyclists and cyclists were the main victims of road accidents.

Sergent Barlen Munusamy, from the Road Safety Unit explained that many motorcyclists do not observe good road conduct. “They overtake in the left and do not wear the protective helmet, there are many careless drivers and those who continue to drink and drive.”
