Killer Roads Claim Another Victim
29-year-old man, Mamad Meerun, was killed in a road accident at Arsenal on Monday night.

The victim, a resident of Vallée des Prêtres, was hit by a lorry. An inquiry by the Terre Rouge police revealed the motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle while heading home around 9 pm and ended up hitting the lorry.

Meerun was then taken to the Jeetoo Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. The autopsy by Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin revealed the victim died due to multiple injuries to the head and had several ribs broken.

The alcohol test carried out on the driver proved negative. He was arrested and appeared in district court of Port Louis on Tuesday. A provisional charge of involuntary homicide was held against him. He is detained and will appear again in court for bail procedures.

According to sources in the Police, more than 30 cases of fatal road accidents were recorded in the first two months of this year.

The Police are aiming to reduce fatal road accidents per 100,000 vehicles, which was 33 per cent in 2012 and is expected to decrease to 32.5 per cent by the end of 2013.
