Road Accidents Claim Five Lives in One Week
Five fatal road accidents in a week have been reported across the island. On Sunday, a pedestrian died in a fatal road accident at Coromandel after he was hit by a car.

The driver was taken to the Coromandel police station for an alcotest and to record his statement. He was detained and will be temporarily charged with involuntary homicide at the Rose Hill district court on Monday.

On Saturday a lorry-helper was killed outright by the very lorry aboard in which he was travelling at Khoyrutty. A police inquiry is underway to determine the circumstances of the accident. According to sources the victim fell from the vehicle and was crushed by the lorry. The driver was informed of the tragedy by a motorcyclist. The victim was transported to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National (SSRN) hospital, Pamplemousses where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

In another incident on Friday, Daniel Riley Marcus Henri was killed by a lorry whose brakes had failed at Cascavelle. The lorry driver, Jean Michel Verloppe told police officers his brakes had failed and he planned to drive his vehicle into a local sugarcane field. However, there were labourers in the field and while he was trying to save the workers he collided against the victim’s car. He was detained and will be temporarily charged with involuntary homicide at the Bambous district court on Monday.

On December 13, a student Mohit Kheel aged 18 from Saint Pierre, who was admitted to ICU SSRN hospital since December 5 following a road accident also passed away.

On December 11, motorcyclist Soochit Burnah died following a heads-on collision with a bus. The victim was motoring in the opposite direction when it crashed against the bus. Soon after the accident a fire broke out and both vehicles were burned.
